LEADING THE CHANGE WITHIN

RESTORATIVE PRACTICES

AT ST COLUMBA COLLEGE

Leanne will cover the school's' provision of training for all staff in understanding human behaviour, the effect of trauma and strategies to correct behaviour positively while maintaining the dignity of the individual as well as strategies that provide high control and high support in the classroom

Relationships sometimes break down. Individuals are sometimes hurt or harmed – serious stuff happens! These are tough, hard to navigate times. Taking a restorative approach takes time, patience, and preparation. High emotions make it especially hard. Supporting all individuals; students, staff and parents through a process that gives them a voice, allows individuals to take responsibility for their actions and understand how their behaviour has affected others is at the core of who we are as a school community. Leanne will share examples of leading this work along with the highs and lows and the ongoing professional development program for all staff to support this important work.

Leanne Carr, Principal of St Columba College will share the journey so far in leading a whole approach to working restoratively at St. Columba College, an R-12 co-educational Anglican and Catholic school.  Reflection on values and beliefs about children and young people has underpinned this challenging work, as well as constant reflection on how to best support students’ social and emotional development. At the heart of this work has been relationships.
